Movement: The Physical Helpline of Life

Movement: The Physical Helpline of Life
By Dr. Frank A. Lee DC, CCEP

Daily movement activity in Fremont is now more important than ever. As humans we have progressed from a hunter-gatherer species to an agricultural species to an industrial species, we have seen a drastic decrease in the amount of movement that we undertake. But why as time and innovation has progressed, is it more important to include various types of movement into our daily lives? The answer is simple, without movement, we would be unable to sustain life. The more sedentary that we become, the more important movement has become. Daily movement is necessary for proper brain function, joint function, and even cognitive ability. But how does this all truly play out?

A correlation exists between movement and the brain, in which we see a supply of sensory information, via the somatosensory system, providing stimulation to the brain and acting as a way of recharging the brain. If our brain becomes deficient in this stimulation, we enter a state of coma. Essentially, without adequate movement to fuel our brain, we lose the ability to experience and respond to our environment.

Why Daily Movement Is Important in Fremont CA

As we continue our journey into why daily movement is important, we next look at joint function. To start this idea, we must look back to a timeless old saying, “ if you don’t use it, you lose it”. This idea is brought forth as point number one. If we do not take each joint to its end-range of motion in some capacity throughout the day, overtime such end range will diminish. Not only does daily movement help preserve the joint motion that we have, daily movement helps bring nutrients into our joints as well as helping to minimize the risk of various joint based issues such as osteoarthritis.

Our last point to look at for why daily movement is important, is its effect on cognitive ability. Movement imparts a couple different actions regarding cognitive function. The first, is action deals with blood flow and oxygen. Without oxygen our brain would be unable to function, and without the flow of blood, oxygen is unable to be transported to the brain. Looking at this, we see that movement is an effective way of increasing blow flow, which in turn increases the amount of oxygen to the brain. The second cognitive aspect that we must look at is the reticular activating system. When you effect the attentional system, which regulates sensory date, you see an increase in balance, turning thoughts into actions, and coordinated movements. As one sees an increase these systems, we start to notice growth in one’s attention and cognitive ability.
