The TMJ and Chiropractic in Fremont
What is the TMJ? Is it something that really deserves our time and effort? How does chiropractic play a role with part of your face? These are some questions that we can begin to ask when we start talking about the temporomandibular joint. It is estimated that roughly 12% of the US population experiences some sort of TMJ dysfunction. This article will take you on a journey on what the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is, what some of the issues that arises in association with it are, and ultimately the role that chiropractic has in relation to it.
The TMJ is a sliding hinge joint that connects the mandible (lower jawbone) to the skull, on each side. Though a small joint, it provides one of the most important functions for our body, that of allowing our moth to open and close. Without it, not only would we have trouble talking, but we would be unable to open our mouth to eat and drink. Now as important as it is, it can have its share of issues. Disorders and dysfunction of the TMJ can present with several symptoms that can range form being a nuisance to those which are more severe. The less severe symptoms can include pain or tenderness in the jaw or on the joint, pain in/around the ear, jaw popping and difficulty chewing. On the more extreme end, TMJ disorders or dysfunction can result in the locking of the jaw making it hard to open or close the mouth. Additionally, it is common to experience headaches or issues with the neck.
Now what causes TMJ dysfunction to occur? There are multiple causes of potential TMJ issues, some of which include: trauma, the disc moving out of alignment, or being damaged by arthritis. In many cases the root cause of the TMJ issue is unknown. Trauma is a very common source, especially amongst athletes. Football, mixed martial arts, hockey, and basketball are just some of the sports that have a greater chance of players receiving some sort of contact with the jaw in an adverse position. What this ultimately means is any form of contact to the head/face can result in damage or dysfunction to the TMJ. Additionally, grinding our teeth, biting our nails, and even certain autoimmune issues can result in TMJ problems.
Chiropractic Care for TMJ in Fremont CA
Where does chiropractic come into play in relation to the TMJ joint? Just as with our spine or the joints of our feet or elbows, the TMJ can be adjusted. When the TMJ is first assessed for movement and dysfunction we will look and feel for symmetry as you open and close your mouth. This, along with a small series of muscle tests allow us to better determine when the dysfunction occurs, i.e. opening the mouth vs closing the mouth. In addition, we will check in on 4 distinct muscles that are involved with the TMJ: the masseter, temporalis, digastric, and pterygoid. After our analysis of the muscles and joint movement we determine the best course of treatment. For some it may require just the adjustment, for some just soft tissue work, and for others it may require both. When it comes to treatment, we will focus on treating the stuck side first and reassess. Following the reassessment, we may determine that we should go forth and treat the opposite side TMJ.
TMJ dysfunctions and disorders can be ever annoying , and even at times painful. However, it does not need to be.
